Interlude

From: Alan Orion, Head of FUTURE

February 1, 1996

Report # 99735 (Private Entry)

Message Begins:

A sense of disbelief filled The Office when word arrived that the Sangres' craft had never made it back to a port. We waited for days that stretched into a week, and then another. People whispered in the halls and shook their heads. Unbelievable that a mere hurricane could wipe the two out like that. It just didn't seem right.

That's what I thought, too. But I reported the loss to the Council, where the reaction appeared to be more relief then disbelief. They mumbled words of condolences, and said they were only glad it had been an act of nature -- ignoring the fact that the storm had not begun naturally.

At least it calmed my superiors and they stopped contacting me every few hours for updates on the situation. I was so glad for the peace and quiet that I forgot to tell them that I didn't believe the Sangre sisters were dead.

I waited. They would call. I knew they wouldn't disappoint me.
